who needs wires to get tripped up?!?!?!

bought laptop... bought wireless router.. set up wi fi network.. surfing is no longer limited to my room..theoretically atleast..but practically tis so freaking slow I might as well make the trip in car and bring back the web page myself... no need to bring it back actually if I'm already there but that's not the point... the point is my wi fi connection is soooooooooooooo damn slow..and just to make things worse some pages doesn't even load.. and I'm not talking about some obscure crap but sites such as yahoomail for one...faulty router perhaps??nope...my flatmate bought a laptop and that's working fine on my network so that is obviously not the culprit..further investigation shows that the wireless cards are different on the 2 machines..so it has to be something wrong with my card, right? wrong!!! just for the sake of experimenting I logged into my neighbour's network (she has an unsecured connection..bless her) and it works fine.. wireless is always slower than the wired connection I guess but it is way better than what I get from my own network and is consistent over all the sites despite the limited signals I get... so then it is something to do with my card (intel pro wireless 3945ABG) and that specific router (SafeCom SWBR 5400)? scoured the web trying to find something to substantiate that but no luck.. or maybe tis just something to do with the fact that my network is secure and something is screwed up with my authentication? altho again the fact that my flatmate is not having any probs kinda rules that out too I suppose... like Drac always says..OMGWTF!!!!! I have been at it trying to figure out what the hell is wrong but I have absolutely had it now.. was just about to throw in the towel and revert back to my wired connection (which works fine btw) when Spectral gave me an idea..rather I took one off him... ask u guys.. any ideas at all y this is happening? apart from the fact that who ever is up there has a twisted sense of humor and is reveling in my misery that is.... oh btw, no prizes for anyone figuring this out except he /she will have my undying gratitude.. what more can u ask for right?

Huh? What did I say?

Btw, I'm quite sorted with the net. When the Comcast connection is being used by the roomie there's always damn fast unsecured wireless in the neighbourhood to leech off of.

Connection strength? Does yours show up at strength 5?

The way wireless is supposed to work is that if the card cannot detect a proper signal at ... say ... 54Mbps, it will step down to 48, then 36 and so on.

also, which type of encryption? WEP or WPA?

could it be the frequency? Download this clever little app called Netstumbler and try a wireless scan.

Of course, it could just be that your card is sucky. I have a built-in Intel wireless card which suffers from the same complaint - even if I sit underneath the repeater it still complains about a weak signal.

Spectral: Not something u said..tis something u did..asking abt the cooking??????figured I'll put my q forward too..nice to hear that YOU got everything sorted but would be much obliged if you can provide some suggestions to my issue..

Drac: Well the signal is fine..it detects full signal if I'm in the same room as the router but as I move away it duly looses the signal but all around the house there's still abt 2/3 bars.. what I can't figure out is the fact that the speeds I get from the neighbour's is far greater and the signal strength is almost always 1/2..encryption is WEP btw..
